Avonia papyracea
Avonia papyracea is a curious dwarf succulent native to the Little and Great Karoo regions of South Africa, where it grows amongst quartz gravel. It forms clusters of slender, white, cylindrical stems, reaching only around 8–10cm in height, with a similar spread. The stems appear silvery-white due to overlapping papery stipules that conceal the tiny fleshy leaves beneath, protecting them from intense sun and heat.
In summer, short-lived, star-shaped white or creamy flowers open briefly during the hottest part of the day, adding fleeting interest to this otherwise foliage-focused plant.
Cultivation requires a gritty, free-draining substrate such as a cactus mix with added perlite, and a bright, sunny position, ideally with some light shade during peak intensity. Water sparingly, allowing the compost to dry out fully between waterings, and keep almost completely dry over winter. It tolerates brief cold down to around -5°C but is best protected under glass in a UK winter.
