Spanish Moss – Air Plant (Tillandsia usneoides)

Spanish moss is a fascinating epiphytic air plant native to the southeastern United States and Central America. Despite its name, it’s neither Spanish nor a moss, but rather a bromeliad that forms long, silvery-grey cascading strands that can reach lengths of 6 metres or more when mature. The plant lacks roots and instead absorbs moisture and nutrients directly from the air through its specialised scales called trichomes.

Culturally, Spanish moss thrives in warm, humid conditions with temperatures between 18-27°C and humidity levels above 50%. It requires bright, indirect light and excellent air circulation. A good soaking under water when dry maybe twice a week is generally better than a mist every now and then but regular misting is also OK. ensuring the plant dries within 4 hours to prevent rot. Feed monthly with diluted orchid fertiliser during growing season. In the UK, it’s best grown indoors or in heated conservatories due to climate requirements. The plant reproduces through wind-dispersed seeds and vegetative fragments, making it relatively easy to propagate by division.

An interesting plant from Mexico and South America. Easily grown as long as a few rules are applied. Rain water is the preferred option, never distilled water. Good light is essential but not direct sunlight. Temperatures are best above 10 C. These plants can look amazing when hanging.
