Pteris quadriaurita ‘Tricolor’, commonly known as the tricolor brake fern or painted brake fern, is an elegant evergreen fern prized for its striking multicoloured foliage. This compact houseplant typically reaches heights of 30-45cm with a similar spread, making it perfect for tabletops, shelving, or as part of a mixed indoor plant display. The distinctive fronds feature beautiful shades of bronze, red, and green, with new growth emerging red before fading to bronze and finally green.

Culturally, this fern thrives in bright, indirect light and consistently moist, well-draining soil. It prefers temperatures between 16-22°C and high humidity levels of 50-60%, making it ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, as this can cause root rot. Mist regularly or use a humidity tray to maintain adequate moisture levels. Feed monthly during growing season with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Remove any brown or damaged fronds to encourage healthy new growth and maintain the plant’s attractive appearance.
