Taxus baccata ‘David’ is a compact, upright male cultivar of English yew, prized for its narrow columnar form and dense, dark green foliage. This slow-growing evergreen conifer typically reaches heights of 2-3 metres with a spread of approximately 60-90cm at maturity, making it ideal for small gardens, formal hedging, or container cultivation. The plant maintains its tight, vertical habit without requiring extensive pruning, displaying attractive year-round interest with its glossy needles.

Culturally, ‘David’ thrives in most well-drained soils, including chalk and clay, and tolerates both full sun and deep shade remarkably well. It prefers a sheltered position and is fully hardy throughout the UK. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry periods. Prune lightly in late summer if shaping is required. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser. Note that all parts of yew plants are toxic if ingested, so position carefully away from children and pets.
