Description
Stipa calamagrostis
Stipa calamagrostis, commonly known as Silver Spike Grass or Rough Feather Grass, is an elegant ornamental grass native to central and southern Europe. This perennial grass forms attractive, arching clumps of fine, blue-green foliage that create a fountain-like effect in the garden. The plant typically reaches a height of 60-90 cm for its foliage, with flowering stems extending up to 120 cm tall.
From midsummer to early autumn, Stipa calamagrostis produces an abundance of airy, open panicles that rise well above the foliage. These inflorescences emerge with a slight pinkish tinge before maturing to a shimmering, silvery-blonde colour. The plumes catch the slightest breeze, creating a mesmerising display of movement and light play in the garden.
Thriving in full sun and well-draining soil, Stipa calamagrostis is drought-tolerant once established. It’s an excellent choice for gravel gardens, prairie-style plantings, or as a specimen in contemporary landscapes. The dried flower heads provide winter interest and can be left standing to add structure to the winter garden.
