Description
Solanum dulcamara ‘Variegata’
Solanum dulcamara ‘Variegata’, commonly known as variegated bittersweet nightshade, is a striking cultivar of the woody nightshade family. This semi-woody climber is prized for its eye-catching foliage, which features green leaves elegantly margined with creamy-white, creating a bright, contrasting effect throughout the growing season. The plant’s twining stems can reach lengths of 1.5-3 metres, making it suitable for trellises, fences, or allowed to ramble through shrubbery.
From early summer to early autumn, ‘Variegata’ produces clusters of star-shaped, purple flowers with prominent yellow stamens. These are followed by small, oval berries that ripen from green to bright red, adding further visual interest. While the berries are toxic if ingested, they provide food for birds.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this variegated form is less vigorous than its plain green counterpart, making it more manageable in garden settings. It’s well-suited to cottage gardens, woodland edges, or as an ornamental feature in mixed borders. Note that care should be taken in gardens frequented by children or pets due to its toxic properties.
