Saxifraga epiphylla ‘Precious Piggy’ BWJ7750 is a choice, clump-forming evergreen perennial from the Irregulares section of the genus, originally collected in China and bearing a Crûg Farm Plants field number. It forms a low, spreading mound of rounded, kidney-shaped leaves, richly marbled and silvered above with purple-flushed undersides, reaching around 15-20cm in height with a spread of 25-30cm.
In late spring, wiry stems carry loose sprays of unusual white flowers with elongated lower petals, held well above the foliage for a striking, airy display against the patterned leaves.
A plant for the connoisseur’s garden, it thrives in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial or dappled shade, such as a shaded rock garden, raised bed or woodland edge. Protect from harsh winter wet and full sun, which can scorch the leaves.
