Sarracenia ‘Blackadder’ is a striking carnivorous pitcher plant hybrid, renowned for its dramatic, near-black pitchers that can reach heights of 60-75cm. This cultivar produces tall, slender pitchers with deep burgundy to black colouration and a distinctive hooded lid. The pitchers emerge in spring and summer, creating an impressive architectural display. In spring, nodding flowers appear on tall scapes before the main flush of pitchers develops.

Culturally, ‘Blackadder’ requires full sun to achieve its best colouration and thrives in boggy, acidic conditions. Grow in a mix of peat-free alternatives (or sphagnum peat) and perlite or horticultural sand, keeping the compost permanently moist with rainwater or distilled water, never tap water. Hardy to -10°C, it benefits from outdoor cultivation year-round. The plant requires a winter dormancy period with reduced watering. Feed naturally by allowing it to catch insects. Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
