Sarracenia ‘Praetorian Guard’

Sarracenia ‘Praetorian Guard’ is an exceptional carnivorous plant hybrid created by Mike King of Shropshire Sarracenias from an original cross made in 2003. This impressive S. × moorei (flava × leucophylla cross) produces very tall, deep purple pitchers that remarkably exceed the colouration of both parent plants. The hybrid combines a large, pink-lipped form of S. leucophylla (L18) with a dark red S. flava var. atropurpurea from Blackwater River State Forest, Florida (F27a), resulting in a huge, vigorous plant that can reach considerable heights.

Culturally, like all sarracenias, ‘Praetorian Guard’ requires boggy conditions with consistently moist, nutrient-poor soil comprising sphagnum peat and perlite or sand. Position in full sun to partial shade outdoors, ensuring the compost never dries out by standing pots in rainwater or distilled water. Hardy to -10°C, it benefits from winter dormancy in unheated conditions. As with all moorei crosses, this hybrid displays exceptional vigour and variable characteristics. Feed naturally through caught insects rather than fertiliser. Repot every 2-3 years using appropriate carnivorous plant compost.
