Pteridium aquilinum, commonly known as bracken or eagle fern, is a large, deciduous fern native to temperate regions worldwide, including the British Isles. This vigorous species can reach impressive heights of 0.5-2 metres, with some specimens growing even taller in ideal conditions. The plant produces distinctive triangular fronds that emerge from underground rhizomes, creating dense colonies over time. The fronds are typically bright green in spring, turning golden-bronze in autumn before dying back in winter.

Culturally, bracken thrives in acidic, well-drained soils and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. It’s extremely hardy and drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for naturalistic plantings and woodland gardens. However, gardeners should exercise caution as bracken can be highly invasive, spreading rapidly through underground rhizomes. It’s best suited for large, wild areas where its spreading nature can be accommodated rather than formal garden settings.
