Description

Primula polyanthus

Primula polyanthus, commonly known as the polyanthus primrose, is a cheerful spring-flowering perennial that brings vibrant colour to gardens and containers. This hardy plant typically reaches heights of 15-25cm, forming neat rosettes of textured, crinkled leaves. The scarlet flowers appear in clusters atop sturdy stems.

Culturally, polyanthus primroses thrive in partial shade to full sun in moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil. They prefer cool conditions and may struggle in hot, dry locations. Plant in autumn or early spring, spacing 20-25cm apart. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly when flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong the display and divide congested clumps every 2-3 years after flowering. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. These plants are ideal for borders, containers, and woodland gardens, providing essential early nectar for pollinators.
