Description

Platanus occidentalis (American Sycamore)

Platanus occidentalis, commonly known as American Sycamore, is a majestic deciduous tree native to eastern North America. This impressive species can reach heights of 30-40 metres with a spread of 15-20 metres, making it one of the largest hardwood trees in North America. The tree is renowned for its distinctive mottled bark that exfoliates in irregular patches, revealing a stunning patchwork of white, grey, and green beneath. Its large, maple-like leaves turn golden-brown in autumn.

Culturally, the American Sycamore thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soil types, though it prefers deep, moist, fertile soils. It has excellent tolerance to urban pollution and compacted soils, making it suitable for parks and large gardens. The tree requires ample space due to its substantial size and extensive root system. Water regularly during establishment, though mature specimens are relatively drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove any dead wood.

Please note we are pretty sure this is correctly named but it is definitely the one in the picture.
