Pilea cadierei, commonly known as the Aluminium Plant or Watermelon Pilea, is a striking foliage houseplant native to China and Vietnam. This compact perennial typically reaches heights of 20-30cm with a similar spread, making it ideal for tabletops and shelving displays. The plant is renowned for its distinctive oval leaves featuring bold silver-white markings that create a metallic, quilted appearance against the deep green background, resembling aluminium foil.

Culturally, Pilea cadierei thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates lower light conditions reasonably well. It prefers well-draining potting compost and temperatures between 16-24°C. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, maintaining consistent moisture without waterlogging. The plant appreciates moderate to high humidity and benefits from regular misting. Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted liquid fertiliser. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy growth and prevent legginess. Propagation is easily achieved through stem cuttings, making it perfect for sharing with fellow plant enthusiasts.
