Pelargonium triste, commonly known as the Sad or Night-scented Pelargonium, is a fascinating species native to South Africa. This tuberous perennial boasts deeply divided, feathery leaves that form a low-growing rosette. Its most intriguing feature is its night-blooming habit, producing clusters of pale yellow flowers with dark purple markings that emit a delightful spicy-sweet fragrance after dusk.

In cultivation, P. triste thrives in well-drained, gritty soil and prefers a sunny position. It’s best grown in pots that can be moved to a frost-free environment for winter protection, as it’s only hardy to about -5°C.
Water sparingly during active growth and reduce watering significantly when dormant. Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Propagation is typically achieved through seed or careful division of the tuber. This unique pelargonium offers gardeners a chance to enjoy evening scent and subtle beauty.
