Description

Orostachys spinosa

Orostachys spinosa, commonly known as Spiny Dunce Cap, is a fascinating succulent native to rocky areas of East Asia. This petite perennial forms tight rosettes of fleshy, blue-green leaves, each terminating in a distinctive spine-like tip, giving the plant its name. The rosettes typically measure 2-5 cm in diameter and grow in dense clusters, creating an attractive mat-like appearance.

In late summer to early autumn, mature rosettes produce tall flower spikes that can reach 10-15 cm in height. These spikes are adorned with small, star-shaped flowers in shades of white or pale pink, adding a delicate contrast to the plant’s robust foliage. After flowering, the parent rosette dies, but is usually replaced by numerous offsets.

Orostachys spinosa thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-draining soil. It’s remarkably cold-hardy and drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or alpine house collections. Its compact size and unique texture make it a prized addition to succulent displays and miniature gardens.
