Lysimachia atropurpurea is a striking herbaceous perennial native to Greece and the Balkans. This elegant plant reaches heights of 60-90cm, producing slender, upright stems adorned with narrow, grey-green foliage. From mid-summer to early autumn, it bears stunning spires of deep burgundy-purple flowers that create a dramatic vertical accent in borders and add a sophisticated colour palette to the garden.

Culturally, this loosestrife thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It tolerates a range of soil types but performs best in consistently moist conditions. Hardy to -15°C, it’s suitable for most UK gardens. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and cut back stems in late autumn. Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour. The plant attracts bees and butterflies, making it excellent for wildlife gardens.
