Description

Ligustrum vulgare

Ligustrum vulgare, commonly known as wild privet or common privet, is a semi-evergreen shrub native to Europe and North Africa. This versatile hedging plant typically reaches heights of 3-4 metres, though it can grow taller if left unpruned. The shrub produces oval, dark green leaves and clusters of fragrant, creamy-white flowers in early summer, followed by glossy black berries in autumn that are attractive to wildlife.

Culturally, privet is remarkably tolerant and adaptable, thriving in most soil types including clay, chalk, and sandy soils. It grows well in full sun or partial shade and tolerates urban pollution, making it ideal for town gardens. Prune hedges two to three times during the growing season to maintain shape. The plant is hardy to -15°C and requires minimal maintenance once established. Water young plants regularly until established. Note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so care should be taken around children and pets.
