Impatiens is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants, celebrated for their vibrant blooms, lush foliage, and versatility in shaded or semi-shaded settings. Found across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, particularly in Africa and Asia, they are commonly known as busy lizzies, touch-me-nots, or jewelweeds. The name Impatiens refers to their explosive seed pods, which burst open when touched, scattering seeds widely — a charming hallmark of the genus.

Impatiens are treasured for their long flowering season, often blooming continuously from late spring until the first frosts. Their flowers, which come in a wide spectrum of colours including pink, red, orange, purple, and white, are typically spurred and slightly asymmetrical, giving them a delicate yet distinctive form. The foliage is soft and often glossy, forming neat mounds that complement the profusion of blossoms.

There are both hardy and tender species, ranging from compact bedding plants like Impatiens walleriana to more unusual perennials such as Impatiens omeiana and Impatiens kilimanjari, which bring an exotic flair to shaded borders. Thriving in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, they prefer dappled light and consistent moisture. Easy to grow and endlessly rewarding, Impatiens bring reliable colour, softness, and cheer to gardens, containers, and woodland plantings.
