Description
Impatiens repens
Impatiens repens, commonly known as Ceylon Jewelweed or Creeping Impatiens, is a unique and charming species native to Sri Lanka. This low-growing perennial forms a dense mat of glossy, succulent-like foliage that spreads via creeping stems, making it an excellent ground cover for shaded areas. The small, rounded leaves are a bright, fresh green, providing year-round interest.
From summer through autumn, Impatiens repens produces a profusion of vibrant yellow flowers. These blooms are characteristically shaped like other impatiens, with five petals and a distinctive spur, but are notably large for the plant’s size, often reaching 3-4 cm in diameter. The flowers seem to float above the foliage, creating a striking visual display.
Thriving in partial to full shade and preferring consistently moist, well-draining soil, its low-maintenance nature and unusual growth habit make it a prized addition for gardeners seeking something different for shaded spaces.
A really lovely tender plant excellent for conservatories etc.
