Found across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, particularly in Africa and Asia, they are commonly known as busy lizzies, touch-me-nots, or jewelweeds. The name Impatiens refers to their explosive seed pods, which burst open when touched, scattering seeds widely — a charming hallmark of the genus.

Impatiens are treasured for their long flowering season, often blooming continuously from late spring until the first frosts. Their flowers, which come in a wide spectrum of colours including pink, red, orange, purple, and white, are typically spurred and slightly asymmetrical, giving them a delicate yet distinctive form.
