Humulus lupulus, commonly known as hops, is a vigorous herbaceous perennial climber native to Europe, western Asia, and North America. This fast-growing vine can reach impressive heights of 4-6 metres in a single growing season, making it ideal for covering arches, pergolas, or fences. The plant features attractive, deeply lobed leaves and produces cone-like flower bracts in late summer, which are famously used in brewing beer.

Culturally, hops thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. The plant requires sturdy support structures due to its vigorous climbing habit. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly when establishing. Hops are hardy throughout the UK and die back to ground level in winter, regenerating vigorously each spring. Prune away dead growth in late winter. The plant spreads via underground rhizomes and may require containment in smaller gardens.
