Hosta, often called plantain lilies, is a much-loved genus of shade-tolerant perennials celebrated for their striking foliage and adaptability. Native to East Asia, particularly Japan, Korea, and China, Hostas are valued primarily for their bold, architectural leaves, which come in an extraordinary range of shapes, sizes, and colours. From petite miniatures just a few centimetres high to statuesque clumps exceeding a metre across, they provide reliable structure and texture in shaded or partially shaded gardens. Leaf colours span fresh greens, deep blues, creamy yellows, and dramatic variegations, often with contrasting margins or patterns that remain decorative throughout the growing season.

In summer, Hostas send up slender stems carrying delicate, bell-shaped or trumpet-like flowers, usually in shades of lavender, purple, or white. Some varieties are delightfully fragrant, attracting bees, and butterflies. Although they prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soil, Hostas are resilient and low-maintenance once established.
