Description

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis,

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis commonly known as Chinese hibiscus or tropical hibiscus, is a stunning evergreen shrub prized for its large, showy flowers. Native to East Asia, this plant boasts glossy, dark green leaves and produces eye-catching blooms in a variety of colours, including red, pink, yellow, and orange.
In the UK, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is typically grown as a conservatory or house plant, as it’s not frost-hardy. It thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers temperatures between 13-27°C.

The plant requires well-draining, fertile soil and should be watered regularly, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
During the growing season (spring to autumn), feed fortnightly with a balanced, liquid fertiliser. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Whilst relatively easy to care for, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis can be susceptible to pests such as aphids and spider mites, so regular inspection is advisable. With proper care, this tropical beauty will reward gardeners with a continuous display of exotic blooms throughout the summer months.
