Description
Hedychium ‘Tai Mammoth’
Hedychium ‘Tai Mammoth’ is a spectacular ginger lily cultivar prized for its impressive stature and magnificent blooms. This stunning herbaceous perennial typically reaches heights of 1.8 to 2.4 metres, making it one of the taller varieties in the Hedychium genus. It produces large, fragrant flower spikes in creamy white hues during late summer to early autumn, creating a tropical focal point in the garden.
In UK gardens, ‘Tai Mammoth’ thrives in rich, moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered position with dappled shade. It requires winter protection in most British regions; apply a thick mulch of straw or compost around the rhizomes in autumn. In colder areas, lift the rhizomes after the first frost and store in barely moist compost in a frost-free location until spring. Regular watering during the growing season is essential, along with occasional feeding with a balanced fertiliser to promote optimal flowering.
This magnificent plant works beautifully in tropical-style borders, large containers or as a dramatic specimen plant. Its bold foliage provides structural interest even when not in flower.
