Description
Hedychium Sikkim yellow
Hedychium Sikkim yellow, commonly known as Yellow Sikkim Ginger Lily, is a striking ornamental perennial that originates from the Sikkim region of the Himalayas. This majestic plant typically reaches heights of 1.5 to 2 metres, creating a bold vertical statement in the garden with its strong, cane-like stems.
The plant produces magnificent terminal clusters of fragrant, bright yellow flowers from mid to late summer, often continuing into autumn. Its attractive lance-shaped foliage provides additional interest with leaves reaching 30-45cm in length, forming an attractive clump.
In UK gardens, Hedychium sikkim yellow performs best in moist, humus-rich soil positioned in full sun to partial shade. Whilst somewhat hardy, it benefits from winter protection in colder regions, with a thick mulch around the rhizomes. In particularly harsh areas, lifting and storing the rhizomes overwinter is advisable. Regular watering during dry spells and annual feeding with a balanced fertiliser will encourage optimal flowering and growth.
