Hedychium deceptum, sometimes known by its synonym Hedychium rubrum, is a striking ginger lily native to the eastern Himalayas. This robust herbaceous perennial typically reaches heights of 1.2 to 1.8 metres when grown in favourable conditions. Its upright stems emerge from thick, aromatic rhizomes, bearing large, lanceolate leaves arranged in an alternate pattern.

The plant’s most impressive feature is its vibrant inflorescence, a dense terminal spike of fragrant red to crimson flowers that appear from late summer into autumn. Each bloom exhibits the characteristic butterfly-like form common to the genus, with prominent stamens extending beyond the petals.

In UK gardens, Hedychium deceptum thrives in moist, humus-rich soil and partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun if adequate moisture is provided. It requires protection from frost, either through mulching in milder regions or lifting and storing rhizomes in colder areas. Winter protection is essential, as temperatures below -5°C may damage the rhizomes. When properly established, this spectacular ginger rewards gardeners with its tropical appearance and sweet evening fragrance.
