Description
Ginkgo biloba
The Ginkgo biloba, often called the maidenhair tree, is a remarkable living fossil that has remained virtually unchanged for over 200 million years. This deciduous tree typically reaches heights of 20-35 metres with some specimens growing considerably taller. Its distinctive fan-shaped leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow in autumn, creating a spectacular display before falling.
In cultivation, Ginkgo thrives in most soil types provided they are well-drained, though it prefers deep, sandy soils. The tree demonstrates remarkable tolerance to urban conditions, including air pollution and compacted soils, making it an excellent choice for street plantings. It grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
The tree is notably resistant to pests and diseases, and can live for over 1,000 years. In the UK, it grows successfully in all regions, showing good tolerance to both frost and drought once established.
