Eupatorium capillifolium, commonly known as dogfennel or fine-leaved thoroughwort, is a tall, graceful perennial native to southeastern North America. This striking plant typically reaches heights of 1.2 to 2 metres, forming upright clumps with delicate, thread-like foliage that creates an airy, almost ethereal appearance. During late summer and autumn, it produces masses of tiny white to pale pink flowers arranged in large, fluffy panicles that attract butterflies and beneficial insects.

In UK cultivation, this hardy perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to various soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained, moderately fertile ground. It’s remarkably drought-tolerant once established, making it excellent for naturalistic plantings and prairie-style gardens. The plant self-seeds readily, so deadheading after flowering will prevent unwanted spread if desired.

Eupatorium capillifolium works beautifully in wildlife gardens, mixed borders, or as a backdrop plant where its fine texture provides excellent contrast to broader-leaved perennials. Its late-season flowering period makes it particularly valuable for extending autumn interest in the garden.
