Description
Dischidia ovata
Dischidia ovata, often referred to as the Watermelon Dischidia, is a fascinating epiphytic plant hailing from Southeast Asia. This compact, trailing species typically reaches lengths of 30-60 cm, making it an ideal choice for hanging baskets or mounted displays. Its most striking feature is its foliage: small, succulent leaves that are ovate in shape and bear a resemblance to miniature watermelon slices, hence its common name.
The leaves of D. ovata are a deep green colour, often with silvery venation that adds to their ornamental appeal. In its natural habitat, this plant grows on tree bark, developing a network of roots that cling to surfaces. Whilst it may produce tiny, star-shaped flowers, these are usually inconspicuous, with the plant being primarily cultivated for its unique foliage.
Thriving in warm, humid environments, Dischidia ovata prefers bright, indirect light and well-draining potting media. It’s an excellent choice for terrariums or as an indoor plant in temperate climates, where it can add a touch of tropical intrigue to home or office spaces.
