Description
Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Green’
Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Green’, commonly known as Leyland Cypress, is a fast-growing evergreen conifer widely used for hedging and screening throughout the UK. This vigorous hybrid can reach impressive heights of 20-35 metres if left unpruned, though it is typically maintained at 2-4 metres for hedge purposes. The plant features dense, feathery foliage in rich green tones that provides excellent year-round privacy and wind protection.
Culturally, Leyland Cypress thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates most soil types, provided they are well-drained. It is remarkably hardy and withstands exposed, windy conditions. For hedging, trim twice yearly once in late spring and again in late summer to maintain shape and density. Water newly planted specimens regularly until established. Space plants 60-90cm apart for hedging. Whilst low-maintenance once established, be mindful of its rapid growth rate of up to 90cm annually, requiring consistent pruning to prevent excessive height.
