About the Family
The genus Crocosmia, also known as Montbretia or “Coppertips” adds a burst of vibrant elegance to gardens with its flamboyant and sword-shaped foliage. Belonging to the Iris family (Iridaceae), Crocosmia encompasses several perennial species originating from South Africa. These plants are celebrated for their remarkable architectural presence and eye-catching, funnel-shaped flowers that dance in a spectrum of warm hues, including fiery reds, oranges, and yellows.
Crocosmia’s distinctive, arching stems bear clusters of blossoms that create a striking visual impact. The flowers, arranged in a candelabra-like fashion, attract pollinators, enhancing the garden’s biodiversity. The genus thrives in well-drained soil and prefers sunny locations, making it a valuable addition to borders and flower beds.
One of the most popular varieties is Crocosmia ‘Lucifer,’ renowned for its intense red blossoms and upright growth habit. Another favourite is Crocosmia ‘Emily McKenzie,’ showcasing vibrant orange flowers with a hint of gold. These plants typically bloom in late summer, extending the garden’s colour palette well into the autumn months.
Cultivating Crocosmia is a rewarding experience, as it combines visual appeal with minimal maintenance. Their resilience, coupled with a penchant for naturalising, makes Crocosmia a charming and enduring choice for gardeners
