Cornus kousa ‘Miss Satomi’

Cornus kousa ‘Miss Satomi’, also known as the Japanese Dogwood ‘Miss Satomi’, is a stunning ornamental tree prized for its long-lasting floral display and compact growth habit. This cultivar typically reaches a height of 4-6 metres, forming a vase-shaped crown that adds graceful structure to gardens and landscapes.

The true flowers of ‘Miss Satomi’ are small and inconspicuous, but they are surrounded by large, showy bracts in a deep pink to rose-red colour. These bracts, often mistaken for petals, appear in late spring to early summer and can persist for up to six weeks, creating a prolonged and impressive display. In autumn, the leaves transform into a mix of reds and purples, extending the seasonal interest.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, ‘Miss Satomi’ prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil. It’s an excellent choice for small gardens, as a focal point, or in mixed borders. The tree also produces strawberry-like fruits in late summer, which are attractive to birds, enhancing its wildlife value.
