Description
Clematis viticella ‘Betty Corning’
Clematis viticella ‘Betty Corning’ is a vigorous deciduous climbing perennial that reaches heights of 3-4 metres when mature. This stunning cultivar produces masses of fragrant, bell-shaped flowers in a delicate pale lilac-blue colour from July through to September. The nodding blooms are approximately 5cm across and emit a sweet, subtle fragrance that attracts pollinators. The plant features attractive pinnate foliage that provides excellent coverage for walls, fences, or pergolas.
Culturally, ‘Betty Corning’ thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with good moisture retention. Plant with the crown 5cm below soil level and provide sturdy support for climbing. It prefers full sun to partial shade, ideally with roots kept cool and shaded whilst the top growth receives sunlight. This Group 3 clematis requires hard pruning in late winter, cutting back to 30cm above ground level. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch annually. The variety is fully hardy and tolerates temperatures down to -15°C, making it suitable for most gardens.
