Carex scaposa, commonly known as pink fairy sedge, is a distinctive perennial grass-like plant native to North Vietnam. This compact sedge typically reaches heights of 20-40 centimetres, forming neat tufts with narrow, dark green leaves that arch gracefully outward. The plant produces characteristic flowering stems that extend well above the foliage, bearing small, inconspicuous brownish flower spikes.

In cultivation, Carex scaposa thrives in moist, well-drained soils with partial shade, though it tolerates full sun in cooler climates. It’s particularly valued for its architectural form and year-round interest, making it excellent for contemporary garden designs, rock gardens, and container planting. The plant is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established. It’s hardy in most UK conditions and can withstand temperatures down to approximately -10°C. Regular division every 3-4 years helps maintain vigour and prevents overcrowding.
