Astilbe is a much-loved genus of herbaceous perennials, prized for its elegant plumes of flowers and attractive, fern-like foliage. Native to Asia and North America, Astilbes thrive in damp, humus-rich soils, making them perfect for borders, stream edges, and woodland gardens where many other plants may struggle. Their feathery flower spikes, ranging in colour from pure white to soft pink, lavender, deep red, and even rich purple, rise above lush green or bronze-tinted leaves from early to midsummer.
