Aristolochia macrophylla, commonly known as Dutchman’s pipe or pipevine, is a vigorous deciduous climbing vine native to eastern North America. This robust plant can reach impressive heights of 6-9 metres when provided with adequate support, making it an excellent choice for covering pergolas, arbours, or large walls. The plant is renowned for its distinctive large, heart-shaped leaves that can measure up to 30cm across, creating dense, tropical-looking foliage that provides excellent screening.

Culturally, Aristolochia macrophylla thrives in partial shade to full sun and prefers moist, well-draining, fertile soil. It’s remarkably hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -25°C, making it suitable for most UK gardens. The plant requires sturdy support structures due to its vigorous growth habit. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly when establishing. Pruning should be carried out in late winter to control size and remove any damaged growth. The curious pipe-shaped flowers, though often hidden by foliage, appear in late spring and are pollinated by flies.
