About the Family

Alstroemeria, commonly known as Peruvian lilies or lily of the Incas, is a vibrant and long-flowering genus of perennials native to South America, particularly Chile and Brazil. Renowned for their exotic, lily-like blooms, Alstroemerias produce elegant, trumpet-shaped flowers in a dazzling range of colours including pink, orange, red, yellow, purple, and white — often adorned with striking speckles or streaks that add depth and character. These blooms are borne on strong, upright stems above lush green foliage from early summer well into autumn, providing months of reliable colour and beauty in the garden.

Highly valued by florists, Alstroemerias make exceptional cut flowers, lasting up to two weeks in a vase. In the garden, they bring energy and brightness to borders and mixed plantings, pairing beautifully with grasses and perennials. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil and prefer a sunny or lightly shaded position. Once established, they are hardy and drought-tolerant, forming dense clumps that return year after year.

Modern hybrids, such as the “Inca” and “Princess” series, offer compact, free-flowering forms perfect for containers or small gardens. Combining resilience, colour, and elegance, Alstroemerias are invaluable plants for both cutting gardens and vibrant summer borders, offering exuberant charm and effortless sophistication.
