Description
Agave potatorum ‘Variegata’
Agave potatorum ‘Variegata’, also known as the Butterfly Agave, is a striking succulent prized for its ornamental foliage. This compact variety typically reaches a height of 30-45 cm, with a rosette spread of 45-60 cm, making it suitable for containers or as a focal point in sheltered free draining rock gardens. The plant’s distinctive leaves are broad, spoon-shaped, and adorned with creamy-white to yellow variegation along the centre. Creating a striking contrast against the blue-green leaves.
Each leaf is tipped with a dark terminal spine, whilst the edges bear small, reddish-brown teeth, adding to the plant’s architectural appeal. Like most Agaves, it is monocarpic, flowering only once at maturity with a tall spike bearing yellowish-green blooms, after which the main plant dies but leaves offsets behind to regrow.
Thriving in full sun, Agave potatorum ‘Variegata’ prefers well-draining soil and is notably drought-tolerant. It’s ideal for Mediterranean-style gardens or conservatories in cooler climates, as it is not really frost-hardy. This Agave brings a touch of exotic beauty to any setting, requiring minimal care whilst offering year-round interest.
