Agastache, commonly known as hyssop, is a fragrant and colourful genus of herbaceous perennials adored for their long flowering season, aromatic foliage, and outstanding pollinator appeal. Native to North America and parts of Asia, these plants thrive in sunny, well-drained positions and are especially valued in prairie-style and drought-tolerant plantings. Their upright, slender spikes of tubular flowers appear from midsummer into autumn, providing a continuous display in shades of purple, blue, pink, orange, and white, depending on the species and cultivar.

Agastache leaves release a warm, minty-anise fragrance when brushed, making them as pleasing to the senses as they are visually striking. Their nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies, and hoverflies in abundance, and in warmer climates, even hummingbirds. Popular species such as Agastache foeniculum and Agastache rugosa are hardy and reliable, while modern hybrids like the ‘Kudos’ series offer compact forms and vibrant colours suited to pots, borders, and smaller gardens.

Drought-tolerant once established and generally low-maintenance, Agastache prefer poor to moderately fertile soil and good air circulation. They pair beautifully with grasses, echinaceas, salvias, and other sun-loving perennials. With their aromatic foliage, bold floral spikes, and wildlife-friendly nature, Agastache bring energy, texture, and movement to any sunny planting scheme.
