About the Family

Agapanthus, commonly known as African lilies or lily of the Nile, is a striking genus of perennials admired for their bold, architectural presence and spectacular summer flowers. Native to South Africa, these plants form dense clumps of strap-like, glossy green leaves from which tall, sturdy stems emerge, topped with large, spherical umbels of trumpet-shaped blooms. Flower colours range from deep indigo and violet to soft lavender, pale blue, and pure white, creating dazzling displays through midsummer into early autumn.

Agapanthus are highly versatile, thriving both in borders and containers, where their upright form and long-lasting flowers add height and drama. Compact cultivars suit smaller gardens or pots, while taller varieties create commanding focal points in mixed plantings. The flowers are also excellent for cutting, lasting well in arrangements, and they are loved by pollinators, particularly bees.

These sun-loving plants prefer fertile, well-drained soil and benefit from regular watering during the growing season. In colder regions, deciduous types are generally hardy, while evergreen forms may need winter protection. Once established, Agapanthus are remarkably resilient and drought-tolerant. With their bold structure, extended flowering, and vibrant colours, they remain a favourite choice for gardeners seeking elegance and impact in summer displays.
