Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Ellen’ A low-growing form with finely dissected brilliant green foliage that fades to orange in the autumn. Reaching around 1 – 1.5m in height with a wider spread of up to 2.5m, it forms a neat dome-shaped mound with an attractive weeping habit. It is excellent as a feature in the rock garden or placed on the lawn or border. Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Ellen’ is a cultivar that spreads a little wider than many, forming a mushroom shape over time. Its natural shape is attractive and should require little to no pruning other than remedial work such as removing dead or damaged branches.
For growing conditions, it prefers well-drained, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and does not tolerate heavy clay or waterlogged conditions. It thrives in partial shade to dappled sunlight, as too much direct sunlight can scorch its delicate foliage. Consistent moisture is essential, especially during the growing season.
