Abelia is a versatile and attractive genus of flowering shrubs, cherished for their long flowering season, graceful habit, and year-round interest. Native to Asia and Mexico, Abelias are typically semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild climates, with arching stems clothed in glossy, ovate leaves that often take on bronze or reddish tints in spring and autumn. From early summer well into autumn, the plants are smothered in clusters of small, tubular, often fragrant flowers, usually white, pink, or blush-toned, which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The blooms are often followed by persistent, colourful calyces that extend the display long after the petals fall.

Abelias vary in size from compact, low-growing cultivars ideal for containers, rockeries, or edging, to larger shrubs that can form elegant focal points or informal hedges in mixed borders. They are tolerant, easy to grow, and adaptable, thriving in sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Once established, they are also reasonably drought-tolerant and require little pruning beyond light shaping.
