Rubus gongshanensis
Rubus gongshanensis is a deciduous scrambling shrub in the rose family, native exclusively to the mountainous slopes of Northwest Yunnan, China, where it grows in bamboo thickets and forest at elevations below 3,500m. It typically reaches 1-1.5m, with a lax, sprawling habit that suits training through other shrubs or allowing it to scramble naturally. The branchlets are dark brown to purplish-brown, slightly angled and softly hairy, with minute prickles and stalked glands.
The leaves are broad and heart-shaped. Narrow clusters of flowers appear in summer, followed in September and October by rounded red aggregate fruits..
Cultivation: grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Given its origins, a sheltered position benefits it in colder UK gardens. Little pruning is needed beyond removing dead or damaged growth.
