Umbilicus rupestris, commonly known as navelwort or wall pennywort, is a charming native British succulent perennial. This distinctive plant typically reaches heights of 10-40cm, with flowering stems extending upwards during summer. The plant is characterised by its round, fleshy, peltate leaves with a distinctive central depression resembling a navel, attached to the leaf centre rather than the edge.

Culturally, navelwort is remarkably adaptable and thrives in well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil. It naturally colonises walls, rocks, and shady banks throughout western Britain. The plant prefers partial shade to full shade and tolerates dry conditions once established. During late spring and summer, it produces elegant spikes of pendulous, tubular, greenish-white flowers. Umbilicus rupestris is fully hardy and requires minimal maintenance, making it ideal for rock gardens, wall crevices, and naturalistic planting schemes. It self-seeds readily in suitable conditions.
