Description

Cautleya spicata

Cautleya spicata is a striking herbaceous perennial from the ginger family, native to the Himalayan regions. This exotic plant typically reaches heights of 45-60cm, forming elegant clumps of lance-shaped, deep green foliage. From late summer through autumn, it produces stunning upright spikes of tubular flowers in vibrant shades of yellowy-orange-red, creating a spectacular display.

Culturally, Cautleya spicata thrives in partial shade to full sun with moist, humus-rich, well-draining soil. It prefers cool to moderate temperatures and appreciates consistent moisture throughout the growing season, though it dislikes waterlogged conditions. Hardy to approximately -10°C, the plant dies back to ground level in winter and re-emerges in spring. Mulch generously in autumn to protect the rhizomes during cold periods. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. This architectural plant is ideal for woodland gardens or shady borders.
