Impatiens parasitica

Impatiens parasitica is an epiphytic species, which means in nature it grows on other plants and trees but does not feed upon them. As a houseplant, it performs well in soil and does not need to be grown epiphytically like in the wild. This attractive species typically reaches heights of 30-60cm and produces characteristic impatiens flowers, Aalmost like small green and red hanging parrots! The plant features succulent stems and will readily droop its leaves if the soil dries out, providing a clear signal when watering is needed.

Culturally, Impatiens parasitica prefers partial shade in a south or west-facing position and is best suited as an indoor plant in the UK. It will thrive planted in any good potting soil, kept moist but in well-drained conditions. Whilst it can sometimes survive frost, it generally will not tolerate low temperatures below 7°C. Regular watering is essential to prevent leaf droop, though care should be taken to ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
