Description
Hedychium ‘Pradhan’
Hedychium ‘Pradhan’ is a distinguished cultivar developed by the historic Chandra Nursery of Sikkim, characterised by its striking apricot-salmon colouration on the throat and filaments. Though sometimes referenced as ‘Pradhanii’, it is likely a selected form of Hedychium spicatum rather than a true hybrid. The name honours Taksari Chandrabir Newar (Pradhan meaning ‘chieftain’), whose sons established the renowned nursery in East Sikkim in 1910.
This fragrant ginger thrives in warm, sheltered south-facing positions with partial shade. It requires rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil and benefits from generous liquid feeding throughout the growing season. Its cultural requirements and hardiness mirror those of Hedychium spicatum, flowering relatively early in the season.
The authentic ‘Pradhan’ displays more intense colouration than similar plants circulating under this name in American horticulture, which typically exhibit paler throats and filaments.
