Description
Bay Tree (Laurus nobilis)
The Bay Tree, native to the Mediterranean region, is an aromatic evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family. The tree features leathery, glossy dark green leaves with wavy margins that release their distinctive fragrance when crushed.
This versatile plant thrives in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade positions. The plant is relatively slow-growing but long-lived, often surviving for several decades when properly maintained.
Beyond its ornamental value, bay leaves are prized in British and European cuisine, imparting a subtle flavour to soups, stews and sauces. The dried leaves are typically removed before serving. Historically, bay was associated with wisdom and victory, with wreaths crowning scholars and champions in ancient Greece and Rome.
