Description
Schefflera taiwaniana
Schefflera taiwaniana is a striking evergreen shrub or small tree native to Taiwan. This elegant species typically reaches heights of 1.8-2 metres in cultivation, though specimens can grow taller in their natural habitat. The plant features distinctive palmately compound leaves with 7-11 narrow, lance-shaped leaflets radiating from a central point, creating an umbrella-like appearance.
In UK gardens, this tender plant requires a sheltered position with dappled shade and protection from cold winds. It thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil and prefers consistent moisture during the growing season. Whilst it can tolerate brief periods down to -5°C, it’s best grown in mild areas or conservatories in most parts of Britain.
The species produces attractive clusters of small flowers in late summer, followed by decorative berries. Regular feeding during the growing season and mulching in autumn will help maintain healthy growth. Light pruning in spring can maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Young plants benefit from winter protection until established.
