Pelargonium graveolens, commonly known as the rose-scented geranium, is a charming evergreen shrub native to South Africa. This aromatic plant has deeply lobed, velvety leaves that release a delightful rose fragrance when touched or brushed against. Its foliage is a soft grey-green, creating an attractive backdrop for the small, pale pink flowers that appear throughout summer.

P. graveolens thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It’s best grown in containers or as a houseplant, as it’s not frost-hardy and requires protection during winter. Regular pinching encourages bushiness, whilst feeding with a balanced fertiliser every fortnight during the growing season promotes healthy growth.

This versatile plant is prized for its essential oils, used in perfumery and aromatherapy. In the garden, it serves as an excellent companion plant, deterring pests with its strong scent.
